Top seed at the Mercedes Cup Gilles Simon, had a good start to the tournament as he defeated German Philipp Petzschner in straight sets with a score of 63 64. He carries on to the second round with confidence, while Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany had the same luck too with a straight set win and didn't show any tiredness after losing the quarterfinal Davis Cup tie against Spain.
After winning the quarterfinal Davis Cup tie against Argentina, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic was upset in the first round by another local hope Nicolas Kiefer. Kiefer shut out Berdych in 2 sets with a score of 63 63.
Another loss included Fabrice Santoro, who is in his last year on the tour.
