Federer needed four sets for victory; Djokovic grooves

Roger Federer was knocked a bit off course today as he faced Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber. The Swiss superstar won the first 2 sets with ease but then was given a wake up call by the German which won him the third set. But Federer didn't have any trouble whatsoever to seal the fourth set and the match. The score was 63 62 67(5) 61 and the top seed will now face his opponent in the recent French Open final... Robin Soderling! All looking forward to that one.
Novak Djokovic solidified his victory as well with a straight set win over American Mardy Fish. The Serb showed no flaws in today's performance and knocked the American off his feet to get to the fourth round.
Dr. Ivo Karlovic made 46 aces in his encounter with French 9th seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and took it to 4 nail-biting sets but won it with a score of 76(5) 67(5) 75 76(5).

Look out tomorrow for Andy Murray taking to the court!

Hewitt surprises No. 5 seed in straight sets; Murray makes great win on Day 4 in London

Day 4 at the All England Club saw many many great matches being played, as No. 3 seed Andy Murray showed confidence and demolished Ernests Gulbis, while No. 5 seed Juan Martin del Potro crashed out of Wimbledon after being defeated by Lleyton Hewitt in straigh sets.
Murray looked solid in his match against the Latvian, having saved break points in his first service game, the 22 year old was never troubled again as he hit 11 aces and won 59 of 71 service points.
“I thought I played well,” said Murray. “I served really well for the whole match. Apart from the very first game where he had a couple of chances on my serve, I didn't give him another break point. I used my variety very well. It was much, much better than the first match [against Robert Kendrick]. I stayed focused on my own serve. [I] didn't give him any opportunities. It was very solid.”
Hewitt was in his best form against del Potro, and showed tremendous tennis, winning to the Argentine with a score of 63 75 75.
“I executed perfectly,” said Hewitt. “[I] hit the ball great. Served unbelievable for most of the match [and I] took it to him right from the start. It was a big win. I wanted to beat a top five guy. These are the places you want to do it, too.”
No. 6 seed Andy Roddick was also on the winning list on Thursday, as he ousted Igor Kunitsyn in four sets, 64 62 36 62.
“A win is a win,” said Roddick. “I knew I was getting the better of him. I knew I was getting a lot more looks at his serve than he was at mine. [I] probably played my best set by far in the fourth set. It was comfortable most of the time. [A] couple things here and there, but overall it was all right.”

Murray through after tough match; del Potro demolishes opponent

On Day 2 of the Wimbledon Championships, Andy Murray went to four sets in his debut match, while fifth seeded Juan Martin del Potro who took Rafael Nadal's place after he withdrew won his match against Arnaud Clement in easy straight sets.
Third seeded Murray had a tough time against Robert Kendrick, as he won the first set after a battle, lost the second set in a tiebreak, and won the next two sets with ease. The final score was 75 67(3) 63 64.
"I was disappointed I lost the second set," admitted Murray. "In the whole match, I think he had two breakpoints on my serve. "When you're serving like that and not giving someone too many opportunities, it's easier to stay calm because you're the one that's always sort of creating the opportunities.
Del Potro easily demolished Clement with a score of 63 61 62, which took 1 hour in 37 minutes.

“I have a chance to do a good tournament,” said del Potro. “When I go into the court I always think [of] victory. Now I have a very good player in front of me, but I have my weapons. I have my game and I am confident and [will] try to beat him.”

All seeds advance for the Day 1, except Blake

The top seed Roger Federer enjoyed a solid performance in his first round match against Yen Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei. The new French Open champion showed his confidence in a straight set win to bring him to the second round of competition. Federer is going for his sixth title at the All-England Club, and might endanger Rafael Nadal's chances at staying number one after Nadal pulled out of the event. Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also made progress, but James Blake let himself down as he was beaten by Andreas Seppi in straight sets with a score of 75 64 76(5). All other seeds got through comfortably.

Turn on your TV for Wimbledon!

With Wimbledon just around the corner (starting tomorrow), you fans are guaranteed the best coverage of this historic event. Though the field is missing Rafael Nadal; Federer and Murray are picked as the favorites. Hopefully the whole field will show some amazing tennis this year to make up for Nadal's withdrawal. Please visit the LIVESCORES link on this blog for the second by second scoring of the event and you also have about a week to vote on who will win this year's Wimbledon.
The 123rd Wimbledon Championships is sure to be the best Wimbledon yet, so look out for it on TV in America on ESPN, ESPN2 and NBC, with the finals scheduled for NBC coverage. I'm not sure about Europe coverage so you might want to find streaming on the Internet.

Stay tuned to this blog, and stay tuned to the TV (or Internet)!

Tursunov takes AEGON title; Sluiter's dream is shattered

Dmitry Tursunov has finally satisfied himself by winning a title at the AEGON International. The Russian played against Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic and showed a convincing performance that elevated him to the podium to take the winner's trophy. The score was 63 76(5) and that records Tursunov's 6th career title.
Raemon Sluiter was denied the Ordina Open today by qualifier Benjamin Becker. Becker became the first qualifier to win a main draw title this year by beating the local hope with a score of 75 63.

Tursunov into final; Sluiter in final after coming back

Dmitry Tursunov is one match away from winning the AEGON International after cruising past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez with a score of 62 62. He will meet Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic who took his opportunity after beating French legend Fabrice Santoro with a score of 64 64. Santoro is scheduled to depart from his tennis career after this season has ended.
While the crowd in 's-Hertogenbosch were delighted to see their countryman to make it to the finals. Wildcard Raemon Sluiter who is ranked 866 in the world, has become the lowest ranked player in the history of tennis to reach an ATP Tour final. The Dutch player has just come out of retirement from the sport after retiring in February 2008, and everything is going his way right now after he won in a three setter today. He will play against German Benjamin Becker in the final tomorrow.

Breaking News: Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon

After losing in the French Open fourth round, and losing both matches at the exhibition event in Hurlingham, UK Rafael Nadal has decided that he is not 100% ready to defend his Wimbledon title.
Nadal is the first champion to not defend his Wimbledon title since Goran Ivanisevic missed the event in 2002. The 6 time Grand Slam champion has been diagnosed with tendonitis since November 2008, and was scheduled to play Arnaud Clement of France in the first round.

"Not to play Wimbledon is one of the toughest decisions in my career," said the 23-year-old Mallorcan.
"I've played with some problems in my knees for a few months but I always felt I'd try and try," added Nadal. "You don't know what your limit is, but I have now reached the limit."

Ferrer cannot defend title; Tursunov stays strong

The third seeded at the Ordina Open and defending champion David Ferrer was shocked today by one of his compatriots, Ivan Navarro in a two setter. Ferrer didn't show any signs of improvement and so Navarro took advantage of the situation to win with a score of 62 64 to go on to the semifinals.
While the second seeded at the AEGON International, Dmitry Tursunov got his act together today to beat compatriot Denis Istomin in two sets as well with a score of 76(6) 64, to avenge yesterday's poor showing.

Ferrer has no trouble; Tursunov battles through

David Ferrer made progress at the Ordina Open today as he demolished one of his compatriots Oscar Hernandez with a score of 64 63. The number 4 player in Spain will now play in the quarters of the event and is looking to defend his title.
Second seeded at the AEGON International, Dmitry Tursunov struggled through his second round match today as he was battling against a qualifier and the crowd's favorite Alex Bogdanovic of Great Britain. The Russian lost the first set in a tiebreaker which Bogdanovic won 7-2, got his rhythm back in the second to take it 64 and pushed through another tiebreaker in the third which he won 7-5. It was definitely not a piece of cake but hopefully Tursunov will pick up his game to prove himself in the quarterfinals.
