Juan Martin del Potro had a perfect start to the season with a win to Sam Querrey in the Auckland final. Del Potro started the match by breaking Querrey, and then clinching the first set 6-4. He then broke Querrey at 4-4 in the second set, and closed out the match in 1 hour and 24 minutes.
Another Argentine, David Nalbandian also won a title in Sydney in a more tougher encounter against Jarkko Nieminen. The score was 63 67(9) 62, and marks the first time since July 31, 2005 that two Argentines won a title on the same day (Gaston Gaudio - Kitzbuhel; Guillermo Coria - Umag).
