Safin and Cilic knocked out of Rogers Cup on Day 1

Former world number one Marat Safin has been knocked out of a tournament once again, this time falling to 13th seeded Gael Monfils who needed three sets to take out the Russian and taking the head-to-head stat to 4-0 in his favor. The score was 62 36 62 and the Frenchman will now face either Lleyton Hewitt or Juan Carlos Ferrero, who both are former world number ones as well.
After assuring the crowd that he was in control after winning the first set, Marin Cilic was in for a big surprise as he was forced to pack his bags by Russian Mikhail Youzhny. Youzhny took the necessary opportunity in the tiebreak to take the second set and eventually let Cilic down mentally to take the match 46 76(4) 61.
Play was halted in the last two matches when rain set its course and didn't let ninth seeded Gilles Simon finish his match against Canadian wildcard Franc Dancevic.
