Top seed Roger Federer had a couple of hiccups during his first match since Wimbledon, but still managed to get a win in straight sets over Frederic Niemeyer, finishing the Canadian wildcard off with a score of 76(3) 64.
Andy Murray got off to a good start in Montreal as well after he defeated Jeremy Chardy of France with a score of 64 62. Murray showed solid shots and fine attitude and will head to the third round.
Novak Djokovic also played against a Canadian qualifier, Peter Polansky. He won the first set 64, but also had a bit of trouble in the second set and was forced to finish it off in a tiebreak. Djokovic won the match 64 76(6).
Other winners include Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Gonzalez and Fernando Verdasco.
