First day in Indian Wells, California showcased some of the world's rising stars and veterans. Ernests Gulbis started his run with a win over American qualifier Kevin Kim. The Latvian up-and-comer was pushed a bit by the American but sealed victory with a score of 63 64. While veterans of the game Hewitt and Ljubicic came through in straight sets, with Hewitt winning 76(3) 63 to Jan Hernych and Ljubicic taking out Kei Nishikori with a score of 63 63.
