Top guns at Basel advance; Roddick nails quarterfinal spot

Roger Federer served up a win over Jarkko Nieminen, which took much more effort than before. Nieminen served for the first at 54, but Federer proved to be mentally more stronger, with a win of 76(6) 76(1) and a booked ticket to the quarterfinals. Other top seeds such as del Potro and Nalbandian had booked their place in the quarterfinals too with Nalbandian having to battle much harder than his compatriot.

Lyon had Roddick come through to the quarterfinals as well with a win over Robby Ginepri. The American fired 26 aces during the match and winning the match with a close score of 76(5) 76(3). Tsonga, Soderling, Ferrero and Simon were among the other winners today at the venue.

While in St. Petersburg, the crowd watched over some mixed results with Murray bashing Ernests Gulbis 64 62, qualifier Andrey Golubev ousting former world number one Marat Safin 64 62 and Mikhail Youzhny being taken out by another qualifier, Mischa Zverev.
