Tsonga survives a nailbiter; top two seeds retire

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga survived a scare of a match today by defeating the latest qualifier for Shanghai, Andy Roddick. The score was an extremely close 57 64 76(5). Tsonga will next play another Shanghai hopeful, James Blake. The stakes couldn't be higher. If Blake wins the match, he will qualify for Shanghai and if Tsonga wins the match he will qualify for Shanghai regarding that Nalbandian loses his semifinal match.

Both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were forced to pull out of their matches with injuries. Nadal retired because of a knee injury and Federer gave Blake a walkover because of a back injury. The other semifinal will have Nikolay Davydenko and David Nalbandian battling for a place in the final.

Robin Soderling also captured a title in Lyon today with a win over Frenchman Julien Benneteau. This win ended a nearly three-year title drought for Soderling, with his last title win being in Milan in 2005. The score was 63 67(5) 61 and the match took 1 hour and 43 minutes. This win also marked Soderling's third title of his career on the tour.

Andreev wins a nail biter of a match; Blake off to winning start

Igor Andreev, the number six seed in Basel, came through a gritty match today with a win over Philipp Kohlschreiber. The encounter lasted 2 hours and 34 minutes, and Andreev fired 17 aces but won five fewer points than Kohlschreiber in his seventh straight victory over the German.
The final score was 76(6) 67(0) 75. Phew!

James Blake started his run in Basel with a bit of a rusty win over Nicolas Kiefer, and a score of 36 63 64. The American is still bidding to reach the year ending Masters Cup for the second straight time.

While in Lyon, Tommy Robredo falls to Julien Benneteau, on his opponents home soil. The score was a little easier than expected, but it was 62 62. Other winners of the day include last week's Madrid finalist Gilles Simon and Robin Soderling.

No big upsets have been made in St. Petersburg today with all the seeds winning their matches, such as top seed Andy Murray with an easy 63 63 win over Victor Troicki and Fernando Verdasco with a win over Latvian wildcard Karlis Lejnieks with a score of 61 63.

More news tomorrow!

Nadal begins his Madrid pursuit

Tuesday at the Madrid Masters was exciting and full of battles. Current number one in the world, Rafael Nadal started the tournament with a battling win against the young rising star Ernests Gulbis of Latvia. But he had gone on to win with a score of 75 36 63.
"The entire match was very tough," said Nadal. "He played very aggressive. You can't get the rhythm during the whole match. His balls were coming very fast; you go behind the line and it's difficult to come back inside. When he's serving, his second serve is very fast too, so it's very difficult."

Nadal's next opponent will be fifteenth seeded Richard Gasquet who also came over a battle against Mardy Fish with a score of 67(3) 64 63.

Fourth seeded Andy Murray came through to the next round with his opponent retiring, but still had an easy 60 21 score during the match.

Also James Blake's chances of getting to the year ending Masters Cup ended, since he lost to Gilles Simon with a score of 36 61 64.
