Massu battles to win in Houston

In the longest three-set match of the 2010 season, Chilean Nicolas Massu prevailed against American qualifier Ryan Sweeting 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 6-4 on Wednesday in Houston to earn his place in the quarter-finals of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship.

The former World No. 9 made the most of his opportunities in the decisive set, capitalising on all three of his break points while Sweeting went two for six on his chances. At three hours and 25 minutes, the match was three minutes longer than Novak Djokovic’s victory over Mikhail Youzhny this past February in the Dubai final.

The 30-year-old Massu, who entered the ATP World Tour 250 tournament with a No. 94 ranking, is through to his first tour-level quarter-final since last July at Umag (l. to Seppi).

Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela also advanced to his first quarter-final of the season after defeating seventh-seeded countryman Eduardo Schwank 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-1. Chela, who is making his Houston debut this week, converted on seven of his 11 break points while fighting off six of seven faced on serve.
